A family acquaintance does / did this because her son was internet sales manager at a national telecom and they split click-thru payments on the "fios" search, without facing a lawsuit from his firm. Pure nepotism, and ethically dubious, not least to search users/consumers. She still had to monitor google search-term bidding daily (hourly?) and only made about 20% net of the search-term bids.
I suspect for most advertisers, it amounts to crowdsourcing the risk and management costs for search-term bidding. Google is the only sure winner.
