But personally, despite agreeing on the poor humor, she builds arguments much more strongly than her counterparts on the other side of CNN.

Well by god I'm sure that the exchange went something like this:

McCain-"HURMPHM! THEY HAVE A BLACK MAN! How can I fight a black man?"

Aide-"Let's find a woman!"

McCain-"LORDS NO! WOMAN AND BLACKS ARE JUST THE SAME SORT OF TERRIBLE"

Aide-"Ah but we will find a dumb woman. One we can control...."

McCain-*Hems and Haws*

Aide-"Look at this one! Gov of remote state, ex beauty queen. Likes to shoot things from planes! Is "folksy".."

I think he invested too much in the Rovian notion that when you are a Republican and you have an uphill battle to fight, motivate the fundie base because they are an army of free, zealous workers who will literally kill for you. Somebody told him that he could chip away the Reagan Democrats who went for Hillary, and they were sort of right, but not right enough. The defections of Conservative Democrat to Republican do not equal the moderate Republican base turning their heads to McCain this year.

I think the model is flawed, because the left has a zealous base too, especially after 8 years of this bullshit. Also 9-11 doesn't have the same kick it used to have. Also jobs.

I just can't believe that any McCain strategist actually thought this maniac would bring Clinton voters into the fold. It must have been what it has turned out to be--an exercise in energizing the base. How in the world can they have thought that someone so virulently anti-choice and anti- everything else Hillary would have swung diehard Clinton followers away from the chance to repudiate eight years of Bush?

I bet the answer has the word 'contempt' in it.
