All right, I'll take the bait. Why is this better than the Beatles?

i mean, this is very very good, don't be mistaken, but people like to throw around shock tags like "better than the beatles" because it makes them feel above the mainstream. while such a statement is after all a matter of opinion, it will be difficult to argue that this band was "better" within accepted frameworks of influence, originality, creativity, mastery of music theory, etc. so we merely take the tag as meaning that zircon here LIKES the zombies better than the beatles.

Modern Angel - 2007-07-17 Oh, good. So where I can read your dissertation on music criticism?

Old_Zircon - 2007-07-18 There are tons of contemporaries of the Beatles who were doing some of the things the Beatles were doing first and better. What makes the Beatles work is that they were excellent pop songwriters who drew from a very wide array of contemporary influences. Their strength is in the breadth of their scope rather than the depth. You could take any single Beatles song and find at least one band who'd already done something similar that was a lot ore interesting, but it would be hard to find anyone who had covered as many areas as them wit such consistency (apart form the obligatory McCartney turd or two).
|
x - 2007-07-18 From "Love Me Do" to "A Day in the Life" in less than five years. No one has ever done anything better and more interesting than that feat with what they had to work with in their time.

The Zombies were a great band. Better than the Beatles, though? Not even fucking close.
|
Stopheles - 2007-07-17 ODDESSY AND ORACLE, however, is better than SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND.
As are many albums made in response to SGT. PEPPER'S, to say nothing of the majority of other albums by the Beatles that are better than the most overrated piece of Boomer culture ever.

Not necessarily better than the Beatles...but really far ahead of thier time. Notice the inflections in his voice...similar to newer bands lead singers.

Better than the Beatles. Not quite as good as the Monkees, and it needs more lurching and "brrrraaaaains", but still better than the Beatles.

She's not there.
Time of the seaon.
Tell her no.
Vs.
Day in the life.
Eleanor Rigby.
Yesterday.
Here comes the Sun.
I'm Only Sleeping.
Strawberry Fields...
No contest.
The Zombies wrote a few spiffy pop songs, but the Beatles win in the end.

Every time I hear the song I think of the ebook by Jennifer Boylan. And yeah, the Zombies were damn good.
