This guy is a really articulate, thoughtful and sensitive person. I mean, when I try to summarize the comparatively trivial adversities I've experienced in my life, I usually can't manage much beyond, "Shit fuckin sucks."
This is a very good summary of what really happened in Vietnam. He also is very good about explaining the disconnect between the president and the pentagon versus what was actually going on over there.
I often wonder if the Pentagon and the President would have even believed the truth if the Stars and Stripes actually published it. But, it seems like there was this endless feedback loop of the top brass only wanting good news and those in the trenches unable or incapable of telling them what was actually going on.
There was a recent book titled Matterhorn, and it definitely portrayed that disconnect really well.
It makes me wonder if after WWII, the military became the thing it was supposed to protect us against.
