This is pretty awesome. I've never been there except for the airport (what's up with the flying pigs everywhere?) but a lot of my gay friends moved from St. Louis and have nothing except for negative things to say about the general public's stance on homosexuality, which is why they moved to the West Coast. Don't get me wrong, go ten miles outside of Portland Olympia or Seattle and you'll still see plenty of homophobia here, but this is a step in the right direction.

Also I can't remember the show but it was some big deal when they were going to show two girls kissing on TV, and they announced it beforehand like "parents lock up your daughters a girl's about to kiss a girl" and that was like less than a decade ago. Now it's two men kissing on ESPN. Pretty fucking rad.

That was either Roseanne or DS9, maybe both. Take your pick and compare the minstrel show to real life up there in awesome video.

....if it would have been tactically better for him to be 'football player (who's gay) gets drafted, reacts same as other football players' and not 'crying gay boyfriend-smoocher gets drafted'.

I'm personally fine with him being himself, and the historical precedent must have been overwhelming for him, but I think it would pull some of the mildly phobic types into more accepting attitudes if he was just plain old "go rams!".

Hopefully I'm wrong about that and it did more good that harm in the short run. In the long run, it will certainly do good, especially if he plays quality NFL football.

Oh you're right it was Rosanne. I never watched the show but it was this huge controversy, same with Ellen Degeneres coming out on the show and people calling her Ellen Degenerate, things like that.

It'll take at least one or two more generations for gays in sports to be considered "normal," especially if it's not the typical ones associated with homosexuality, like figure skating, gymnastics.. The way the commentator mentions "openly gay" at the beginning still represents the rift. I don't know shit about football but to each their own; my personal hatred, ironically enough, was being called a faggot," among other things, by the assistant coach of the Junior Football league in like fifth grade, and that I'd never be good at it.
