im asian so this is totally not racist and also the easiest way to cut a chicken nugget in half is to karate chop it

heyitslozeau - 2009-02-03

being Asian doesn't mean you determine what is racist.

Lindner - 2009-02-04

I'm German, so I can further assure you this isn't racist.

But I am FASCINATED by the parrallel between eastern and western culture, in that the McNugget has much in common with chinese cuisine, in that the "chicken" in the nugget isn't neccessarily chicken...

robotkarateman - 2009-02-04

I'm American. I also agree this is not racist because chinks don't have feelings.

FineFilter - 2009-02-04

I'm racist and those kids are Asian.

Seris - 2009-02-04

yes it does, i am a supreme asian level 3 and that means i get to declare what is racist to asian culture and what is not

and also i was joking GOD

Lauritz Melchior - 2009-02-05

All of these stars are for this comment thread.

gazebo - 2009-02-03

Here I was expecting some "ching-chong" action or maybe something with buck teeth.

Seris - 2009-02-03

it's pretty much the same thing.

chumbucket - 2009-02-04

nah, I was expecting that or "I'm ruvin' it" at the end...just ended up being a well done and entertaining ad.

TeenerTot - 2009-02-03

No, that's how Kung-Fu Panda eats McNuggets.

sosage - 2009-02-03

I'm offended. They're portraying Chinese people doing awesome shit...wait...what?

BOOSH - 2009-02-03

well thats a misleading description if i ever saw one

Camonk - 2009-02-03

But yes even though McDonalds are all over the fucking place and even though 12 McNuggets cost like 40 cents, there are constant kungfu fights over them in that godforsaken land.

IrishWhiskey - 2009-02-03

Which is why its racist. The message is that Chinese people are stingy midgets. Those are meant to be adults.

Blandwiches - 2009-02-03

Kung Fu is a real thing, not a stereotype. This isn't racist. This doesn't even imply every Chinese kid does Kung Fu. This is like showing Hawaiians surfing or South Americans playing Jai Alai or white people... What do white people do? Fly kites? Yeah, this is like showing white people fly kites.

afp3683 - 2009-02-03

In Arabia they attach jagged glass to the strings and have deadly kite fights, so white people can't even get that one right.

The most interesting things white people do is visit microbreweries go to theme parties and shop at Ikea.

a flaming monkey - 2009-02-03

LARPers are predominantly white, so we've got something there.
Also, you ever see how they catch fruit bats in Sulawesi? They attach hooks along the length of kite strings and fly them at dusk. Now that's a kite sport. Fruit bat is disappointing though, it tastes like chicken.

heyitslozeau - 2009-02-03

with that logic showing black people rapping, playing basketball and eating fried chicken is not racist because rapping, basketball and fried chicken are real.

I don't think you know what a stereotype is.

IrishWhiskey - 2009-02-03

Note to self: Don't take any pictures of Shaq if he's at KFC

Blandwiches - 2009-02-03

Showing black people rapping, playing basketball, and eating fried chicken isn't racist. Do you know why? Because there actually are black people who rap, play basketball and eat fried chicken.

Making a broad generalization that's all black people do, that's racist.

I know what a stereotype is but this video isn't one.

allcaps - 2009-02-04

It's racist because once South China kept the kung fu in bondage. But a great Master, Lin Coln, emerged to do battle with their Grand Dragon. Lin Coln triumph, and kung fu was set free!

Directed by Ang Lee.

fluffy - 2009-02-03

I CALL FAKE

Chet - 2009-02-03

Racist? Is this some meta joke I don't understand?

Cena_mark - 2009-02-03

Racist is a dreadfully overused word.

heyitslozeau - 2009-02-03

the commondification of a culture into 1 dimensional stereotypes has it's roots firmly in racism.

IrishWhiskey - 2009-02-03

That's arguable. And even granting that, just because it shows two Chinese kids who are good at martial arts, doesn't mean its affirming this of all Chinese people. If they show Americans playing football, or Australians throwing a boomerang, its not racist. Just showing people doing something identified with a nation (in this case the Crouching Tiger references) doesn't make it a stereotype.

Goofy Gorilla - 2009-02-03

It's a 2-dimensional stereotype! The metaphor is that the characters are flat.

Cena_mark - 2009-02-03

Advertising requires stereotypes. A 30 second ad doesn't have time to give these kids a back story to make it PC. The kids are Chinese, they do Kung Fu, Bam you have your commercial.

Frank Rizzo - 2009-02-03

Prickly Pete is a moron or oriental and easily offended

racism is when you believe that your race is superior to all others and that all other races are inferior to yours.

Cena_mark - 2009-02-04

Exactly. Not PC, yes. Perhaps offensive, but not racist.

Xenocide - 2009-02-03

Still waiting on that racism delivery. All I've got now is a couple of kids doing cool flips and stuff.

Cube - 2009-02-03

No dipping sauce? Barbarians.

joffe b - 2009-02-03

It's not RACIST in the overtly evil or stupid way people like to laugh at, but it is pretty basic Orientalism and all the white people going "OH MANY WHY ARE THEY COMPLAINING? KARATE IS AWESOME" are kind of missing the point.

I mean, yeah kung fu is cool and I don't think this commercial is offensive in any way, but when its the only thing Asians are allowed to do on Western TV I'm not going to get all up in some Chinese person's face if they get offended.

+1 star because of the very tangible racism in implying Chinese people will just eat anything no matter who's filthy feet have been kicking it

Comatose2 - 2009-02-03

They should be solving math problems while doing kung fu.

fatatty - 2009-02-04

As long as they're not driving cars they can do whatever they want in western TV.

boba. - 2009-02-03

not racist

Prickly Pete - 2009-02-03

What about the mammies on all the Church's Chicken commercials? They do anything for ya?

boba. - 2009-02-03

are there not allowed to be an asian kung fu movie reference or does it have to be non-asians doing the kung fu in the asian kung fu movie reference? or is the kung fu movie itself racist?

spikestoyiu - 2009-02-04

They originally casted white kids, but the activity caused them to have heart attacks and they died.

Prickly Pete - 2009-02-04

It has to be white actors in yellow face.

allcaps - 2009-02-04

Hey, I did some research.

http://www.china.org.cn/business/2009-01/05/content_17056043.h tm
"McDonald's keeps growing through crisis."

"McDonald's opened it's 1000th outlet in China in Dongguan, Guangdong province in November and plans to add 175 new Chinese outlets this year. The company said the 2009 plan will create 10,000 restaurant jobs and 1,200 manager positions."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kung_fu_panda

"Kung Fu Panda was also well-received in China. It made nearly 110 million Chinese Yuan by July 2, 2008, becoming the first animated film to make more than 100 million Yuan in Chinese box offices. The Chinese director Lu Chuan commented, "From a production standpoint, the movie is nearly perfect. Its American creators showed a very sincere attitude about Chinese culture." With the film's success at the Chinese box office, some people within China have questioned the quality of China's domestic animations. The fact that such a successful film based on Chinese culture was created by the American movie industry has led to some Chinese introspection."

You're going to have to do better.

TeenerTot - 2009-02-04

Thank you allcaps.

That's what I meant.

prang - 2009-02-04

Boy, that Yuen Woo-ping sure is a racist motherfucker.

UnderANeonHalo - 2009-02-04

Starred for managing to troll the front page.

ProfessorChaos - 2009-02-04

Good to see they get exercise to work off grossly unhealthy food, at least.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2009-02-04

Please remember that history is racist and all references to culture, negative or positive, imply stereotyping and racism.

In future adverts there should be nothing but lists of technical information in all popular languages.

allcaps - 2009-02-04

Given the state of advertising, this might not be a bad idea.

Rape Van Winkle - 2009-02-04

Yeah, I'm pissed there aren't any white people in this also.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-02-04

It's stereotypical but not racist. It's no Jerro.

Evilhead - 2009-02-04

one star for making me watch 15 seconds of a McDonalds commercial. fuck you.

kennydra - 2009-02-04

This commercial is pretty cool. -1 for stupid title and description though.

Prickly Pete - 2009-02-04

Whenever someone posts a clip from an anime with a really stereotypical American guy in it, you all think it's funny and wacky. But when we do the same thing to someone else, suddenly it's "Wow, that was really well done and really celebrates other cultures!" Maybe not full on "racist," but just as absurd as a Chinese commercial with a white guy in a red white and blue military uniform having a baseball bat sword fight with someone over a hamburger.

Prickly Pete - 2009-02-04

Actually I guess they'd still have to be fighting over a McNugget, since there's nothing inherently Chinese about McNuggets. Even so...

Slim Jim - 2009-02-06

ha.

Prickly Pete. When will you learn?

I bet you're a bouncer.

numb - 2009-02-07

How do you eat them? With your hands?
