SteamPoweredKleenex Amen. I seem to be the only one left on the planet who wants cake to taste good more than I want it to look spectacular. Simple cake with at most a quarter-inch of frosting (perhaps a creme of some kind spread between layers) does me just fine. Fondant goes in the trash can.
Craptabulous I like to imagine what those cakes on shows like ace of cakes taste like when I go see my mom and she's watching them.
Probably like crap.
citrusmirakel It's pound cake, fondant, modeling chocolate and wooden dowels to maintain the structure, so it basically like eating bricks and mortar except there's more sugar.
dead_cat Art cakes like this are usually made from pre-cooked blanks that are carved and staked and glued into place with icing over the course of the cake's construction. By the time it's done, the cake itself has often gone stale.
So yeah, probably would taste terrible.
Gmork Those blanks and mortar and construction style cakes are fine if you dont go overboard on them. Make 'em as tall as a three layer and be done with it. That's perfect cake size unless it's a damn wedding or crazy occasion.
